Functional Septorhinoplasty in London
Functional septorhinoplasty aims to improve nasal breathing by addressing a bent nasal septum and the shape or support of the nose. The appearance of the nose may also change. A consultation with Mr Pavol Surda in London can help establish which treatment is appropriate for you.
When might it be considered?
Persistent nasal blockage may have several causes. Surgery may be considered when the structure of the nose contributes to obstruction, including after an injury. Nasal sprays can help swelling inside the nose, but do not straighten a bent septum. Not everyone with a blocked nose needs an operation.
Assessment and treatment choices
Your symptoms, previous treatment and goals are discussed alongside an examination of your nose. The consultation considers whether medical treatment, septoplasty alone or septorhinoplasty is appropriate. Expected changes in breathing and appearance, limitations and alternatives should be agreed before surgery.
What does surgery involve?
Septorhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia. It combines work on the septum with reshaping or supporting the nasal framework. The precise approach depends on your anatomy and the agreed treatment plan. Internal or external splints may be used during early healing.
Recovery and follow-up
A blocked nose, swelling and bruising are expected initially. Breathing may feel worse at first and can improve as swelling settles. You will receive individual advice about nasal care, time away from work, exercise and follow-up. Allow time for recovery; swelling and the final result can take months to settle.
Risks and realistic expectations
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, changes in sensation, a hole in the septum and an unwanted change in appearance. Nasal blockage may persist, and further treatment may be needed. There are also risks associated with general anaesthesia. Your individual risks and the limits of surgery will be discussed before you decide.
Arrange a consultation
An appointment is an opportunity to discuss your symptoms and options. It does not commit you to surgery. Consultation fees and clinic contact details are available on this website.
